We have the power to write our own story
We have the power to write our own story, don’t let the story write us. I want to preface this post by saying I have been here before. I have allowed myself to sit in a state of victimhood, feeling like life was going to swallow me whole. When we sit in victimhood, nothing changes. When we allow our ‘story’ to control our life, nothing changes. BUT … when we choose to write our own script everything changes. We are the writers of our life and we have the power to change our story. What do I mean by ‘story’? ... We all have them. They are the things we consider problems, issues, fears or the events that we feel are going wrong or holding us back. It may even be a feeling that you hold onto about yourself because someone said this to you 5 years ago. It’s that repeated ‘thing’ that you’re holding onto which is causing you to sit stagnant in one or many areas of your life. The more we tell our 'story' over and over again the more we sink deeper into our victimhood. The first step for me was awareness and catching my thoughts and ‘stories’ when they came through. Then choosing to change my language and thought patterns around it. Instead of making a statement I began asking questions which opened the door for possibilities. Examples:
“Today has been a terrible day”- change that to “what can I do today to make me smile?”
”I am going to spend the entire day in bed. Allow my emotions to take control and maybe sink myself into a TV show to dull the pain and forget for a few minutes.” - Instead...Peel yourself out of bed, have a shower, make your external look a little fresher and go for a walk outside. Be amongst nature and soak up the fresh air.
Both of the above can be incredibly hard but when you’re passing through a low period in life or even just for a day, reach for the low hanging fruit. Focus on the little things you can change and start there. Remember you have the power to make change. You can’t rewrite what’s happened in the past and you shouldn’t want to, those chapters have taught you what you know today but you can choose to write what the next chapter brings.
